Birthdays for both of us are extremely important. We cherish and hold them very dear to our heart and honor them like a personal holiday. But every year, as we get closer to Ale’s birthday, the big reveal is whether there’s a fun dinner party to plan or if we’re jet setting somewhere. For her 30+1 birthday, she decided to take the family to a fabulous new location to unwind together…..and during that 4 day trip, we did exactly just that.

We had talked about visiting Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca for a while and Ale’s birthday was the perfect occasion. It’s as relaxed as you would imagine a surf town to be with the magical Mexican touch.

There are key moments that I still remember vividly: I saw the most beautiful beach sunsets here – a fiery red sky setting the background for a red setting sun. I can still remember the echoing sound of the millions of tiny rocks as they crashed against the pristine shoreline. The insanely delicious local cuisine we ate prepared by our wonderful in-home chef, Milady. Taking about 10 naps a day, and syncing with nature – waking up with the birds and falling asleep with the moon. And nuestra casita – the most beautiful home we’ve ever seen in a secluded sanctuary.

“Asi te envuelve Mexico
Asi te sabe Mexico
Asi se lleva a Mexico en la piel”

We were only 10 minutes away from the busy Zicatela Beach and Carrizalillo Beach, the best front row seats for every sunset. Lychee in the Brisas de Zicatela is such a vibe and the food is delicious. We were able to sit on the floor, listen to live music and drink great craft beer. For Ale’s birthday, we went to Espadín, which is one of the best meals we had in town. The fish was prepared to perfection! This beautiful restaurant is set in a cove backed by steep cliffs and the perfect spot to view the magic hour.

Since Oaxaca is Mexico’s capital of mezcal, we unanimously decided to go to a mezcal tour on our last day. We researched a few mezcalerias and ended up booking at the off-the-beaten-path, Ruu Piil. They make 100% artisanal mezcal by using ancestral techniques like distilling in a clay pot. The friends and owners, Tomas and Antoine, were an absolute pleasure to meet and taught us everything we need to know about this delicious spirit.

There’s so much to do in this picturesque, laid back coastal town that makes us want to visit again very soon (and this time with a larger suitcase to bring back more goodies)!

Magic

Hour

Nati is a true Pisces and 'me-time' is one of her favorite pastimes. Traveling feeds her soul in the most beautiful and inexplicable ways and allows her to dream with her eyes open. She truly believes that inspiration and creativity can be found all around us. Marketing and innovation couldn't be a more perfect fit. The lighting during the magic hour, homemade pasta, shoes, taquitos, live jazz, un asadito con la familia, cocktail hour, cookies, beach days, jamming to old school punk rock at the top of her lungs while air drumming - these are just a few of her favorite things. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
