Thanksgiving family trips are the best! They kick off the holiday season, it’s winter wonderland in most of the world, and work starts to slow down, making it the perfect time to escape Miami’s go-go-go lifestyle and get in the joyous holiday spirit. This year we were all craving to fully disconnect. For us, that meant getting out of our comfort zone and going somewhere new, with a 6 hour time difference, feeling lost with the language, experimenting with extravagant cuisine and getting hit with culture shock. Scandinavia checked all of the boxes.

A hop, skip and a jump in the airplane and 1 hour later we were in Copenhagen and off exploring.

Here’s our recommendation for 4 days in copenhagen

STAY

We stayed at a charming AirBnB in the heart of Nyhavn

ADDRESS:
Lille Strandstraede 2 3.sal,
Copenhagen, 1051, Denmark

5/5

Keep in mind that this special place is located on the 3rd floor, so travel light, or you’ll find yourself struggling lifting suitcases up the 4 flights of narrow stairs. Regardless, totally worth the incredible views of Nyhavn.

TRAVEL TIP

We used Luggage Hero to drop off our luggage before check-in, so we were able to start exploring early and baggage free. This is a service we never knew existed, but so practical and a very unique experience. You basically check in with a local shop via the app, drop off the luggage, and you get charged by the amount of luggage and the hour. We dropped ours off at Gudrun’s Goodies and met the nicest coffee shop owner. We paid $60USD to hold 8 suitcases for 5 hours – not too shabby!

STROLL

Our first stop was The Round Tower. It’s the oldest functioning observatory in Europe and an icon in the Copenhagen cityscape. Fun fact: The floor is all original and there are no steps as the king didn’t want to walk, so he asked for it to be built in such a way that his horse carriage could take him to the top! There are only a couple of wooden stairs at the actual observatory.

Indre By is the historic center of Copenhagen. Filled will a maze of cobblestone streets, charming squares and wonderful museums, making it one of the best places to stay in Copenhagen. Nyhavn is situated in the central Indre By neighborhood.

Christianshavn is one of the most beautiful and romantic neighbourhoods in Copenhagen. Located across the water from Indre By, Christianshavn stretches across several islands and is characterized by the canals and waterways that carve throughout it.

SHOP

Honestly, what we mostly shopped for were candles and home decor. Hay is an amazing Danish furniture store. There’s a whole section dedicated to candles to inspire hygge.

Studio Arhoj was also incredible – the studio has its glass blowing hot shop, ceramic pottery and a flag ship store in the heart of Copenhagen and we fell in love with their ghost designs.

We also shopped and drank lots of craft beers. They even had variations of Christmas Beer when we visited, which is definitely not to be missed.

PICTURE SPOTS

Walk to Jægersborggade. It’s full of bars, boutiques, cafés and cobblestones making it one of Copenhagen’s trendiest and most photographed streets.

TIPS

Just like the Swedes soak in the wonderful fika tradition, the Danes enjoy the lifestyle of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga). It is a way of lighting one’s soul by finding comfort, pleasure, and warmth in simple, soothing things such as a cozy atmosphere and through cherishing the little things. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world.

FUN FACTS

Copenhagen is known for being the city of fairy tales and one of the happiest cities in the world. You may have heard of Hans Christian Andersen – a renowned Danish writer who wrote several famous fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, among many others. You can find The Little Mermaid sculpture from 1913 commemorating Danish classical and historic figures – it still remains one of Copenhagen’s top tourist attractions.

Nati is a true Pisces and 'me-time' is one of her favorite pastimes. Traveling feeds her soul in the most beautiful and inexplicable ways and allows her to dream with her eyes open. She truly believes that inspiration and creativity can be found all around us. Marketing and innovation couldn't be a more perfect fit. The lighting during the magic hour, homemade pasta, shoes, taquitos, live jazz, un asadito con la familia, cocktail hour, cookies, beach days, jamming to old school punk rock at the top of her lungs while air drumming - these are just a few of her favorite things. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
